How the Site health score is calculated
Method version site-health-score-v1 · Last updated
In short
The Site health score rates a website's technical and content quality from 0 to 100. Actavero crawls up to 200 pages, runs 45 checks on crawlability, on-page content, internal linking, markup, internationalisation and security, and scores each category by how often its checks fail, weighted by severity. The overall score is the mean of the category scores.
Formula
Fail rate of a check = pages failing ÷ pages the check applies to Category score = 100 × (1 − Σ (weight × fail rate) ÷ Σ weight) Weights: error 3, warning 2, notice 1 Site health score = mean of the category scores that have applicable checks
How it is calculated, step by step
- Crawl the site from its homepage and sitemap, up to 200 pages, rendering pages that need JavaScript.
- Run each check on every page it applies to (e.g. title length, broken links, canonical tags, structured data, hreflang, HTTPS).
- Compute each check's fail rate and weight it by severity.
- Score each of the six categories and average them into the Site health score.
What goes into it
- Crawled pages
- Up to 200 pages per site, the same budget for every brand.
- Checks
- 45 checks, each with a category and a severity (error, warning or notice).
- Link-graph coverage
- Checks that need the whole link graph (e.g. orphan pages) only count when enough of the site was crawled.
Data sources
- Actavero's own crawler (HTML fetch, rendered when needed)
- robots.txt and XML sitemaps of the site
How often it is updated
Monthly on the 1st, and on demand within the plan's re-tests.
How to read it
- The category breakdown shows where points are lost; the biggest losses are listed first.
- Gaps compare your pass rate per check with your competitors', so you see what they do better.
- Scores are only comparable within the same formula version (shown on the label).
Example
A category with one error-level check failing on 50% of pages and one notice-level check passing everywhere scores 100 × (1 − (3 × 0.5 + 1 × 0) ÷ 4) = 63.
Limitations
- A sample of up to 200 pages, not the full site.
- Sites that refuse automated requests are reported as blocked and not scored, instead of being given a misleading low score.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a blocked site not scored?
When a site refuses our requests we only see its block page; scoring that would be unfair and misleading, so we report the block instead.
Do all checks count equally?
No. Errors weigh three times as much as notices, warnings twice.
