How the Share of conversation (online mentions) is calculated
Method version visibility-v2 · Last updated
In short
Share of conversation is a brand's share of all online mentions of the tracked brands over the last 30 days, on websites, blogs, forums and news sites in the market's country, with the split into positive, neutral and negative sentiment. What brands post on their own social accounts is measured separately (see Social media: own channels).
Formula
Share of conversation of b = mentions of b ÷ Σ mentions of all tracked brands × 100
How it is calculated, step by step
- Count mentions of each brand name in the last 30 days per source type.
- Classify each mention's sentiment.
- Divide each brand's mentions by the total.
What goes into it
- Mentions
- Public mentions of the brand on websites, blogs, forums and news sites.
Data sources
- Planned: DataForSEO Content Analysis API. Until connected, labelled sample data.
How often it is updated
Monthly.
How to read it
- A high share with negative sentiment is a reputation issue, not a strength.
Limitations
- Covers public content only; closed groups and private messages are not included.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include social media posts?
No: this is what others write about the brands on the web. The brands' own social accounts (followers, posts and engagement) are compared under Socials → Own channels.
